What Are Glazed Tiles Made Of?

Glazed tiles are a traditional, high-end roofing material in China, highly prized for their beautiful appearance and durability. They are made from four main materials: pure clay, glazed clay, pottery clay, and lime sand. The selection and application of these materials directly impact the quality and properties of the tiles.

First, clay is a key raw material in glazed tile production. High-quality clay offers excellent plasticity, high refractoriness, and resistance to cracking, ensuring the quality and stability of the tiles. The glazed clay used in glazed tiles is typically a mixture of limestone, wood ash, and clay. This material is highly durable and waterproof, making the tiles more sturdy and durable.

Pottery clay and lime sand are also common materials used in glazed tile production. Pottery clay is a mixture of clay, sand, and some organic matter, and is characterized by its high plasticity and affordability. Sand-lime, on the other hand, is a mixture of limestone and fine sand. It is fireproof and moisture-resistant, but has lower strength.

The production process of glazed tiles begins with crushing, mixing, forming, drying, and firing the raw materials. Drying and firing are the most critical steps. During the drying process, the tiles are placed in a drying room or on a drying rack, where they are dried naturally or force-dried at an appropriate temperature and humidity. The firing process involves placing the dried tiles in a kiln and firing them at high temperatures to make them stronger and more durable.

Glazed tiles have a wide range of applications. They are often used in traditional architecture such as palaces, temples, and gardens, but can also be incorporated into modern architecture and decoration. They are also widely used in the production of handicrafts and cultural and creative products, such as glass ornaments and hanging decorations. These products are not only beautiful in appearance but also highly collectible and ornamental.
